An Ardrossan woman has started her own women’s basketball team after being unable to find an existing one in the area. June Strang, a keen amateur player since her schooldays and enthusiastic Lakers fan, discovered that the nearest team she could find was twenty miles away.

June said: “I loved basketball when I was at school, and I wanted to keep playing after I left, but I wasn’t able to find a women’s team locally. So, I made enquiries at the new leisure centre in Irvine, but found that they currently don’t have a team.

“The nearest team I could find was in Ayr, and they seemed to be geared towards experienced players. That’s when I decided to start a team myself.”

Ardrossan resident June Strang has started her own women’s basketball team.

June then looked around for a suitable venue and approached the Irvine leisure centre.

“The centre has great facilities,” says June, “But they wanted £28 per hour to hire a basketball court. That was too expensive for me just starting up.

“I then made enquiries at Ardrossan Academy and they were able to offer their PE wing for £11.85 for an hour and a half. So, not only was it better value, it was more local.”

Having found a suitable venue, June is now looking for people to join the team. She said: “I’m looking for anyone aged 18 to 60 regardless of experience. We will be providing coaching for anyone who just wants to learn.”

The team meets on Friday evenings at 6pm at Ardrossan Academy PE wing and there is a small charge of £1.50 per session to cover the cost of hiring the facility. Anyone who would like to support June can contact her via the team’s Facebook page.
